Reasonable Rent - That's about it.
Star Rating - 8/29/2016
The "Old South" is alive and well, thing about Baptists is they look like real people. Also come late Spring several religious groups feel they have the right to knock on your door trying to sell their particular version of God. Just recently beer sales were allowed on Sundays (after 12PM) so that should tell you a lot about the social environment here and the conservative hold on this town that thinks it's a city.

The downtown use to be the perfect small town feel, untouched by co-existing with UGA. That has changed considerably recently and very quickly. Huge student apartment complexes are squeezing what there was of a comfortable downtown into nonexistence. The irony of would-be political activist is best captured in the defeat of a centrally located Walmart grocery store. The local color that was located at the proposed location was instead torn down for a huge student apartment complex that has absolutely no benefit to the neighborhood people who remain.

The so-called music scene still thinks it is relevant and superior because of the B-52s and REM. Excuse me, how long ago was that? If you know three chords and you can't get a gig in this town/ You aren't trying. This is a college town and it supports bars like any other; that is the extend to the significance of the so-called Athens Scene today.

As for Culture in general? There may be a sprinkling of roughly a half dozen galleries of people who think they are in New York. They aren't. If you are lucky a touring company may perform at the Classic Center or you may see a band of some importance at the Georgia Theater.

Rent is reasonable. For the basics of life: living space (rental), utilities, food. This is all attractive. Public transportation is fairly bad, service on Sundays was just added recently with no service on holidays and typically it will take you an hour to get across town.

Things may be about to get worse with the current local government aging out and the remnants that destroyed OWS aka Occupy Athens trying to claim political advancements they are not responsible for as well as place a figure head in office. They may try again in 2018.

Update: I am a long time resident where I rent. Renting a duplex. Only recently have I begun to fear for my safety. It seemed to happen over the course of a few months last year. The development became a ghetto. I moved here for reasonable rent and because it was a peaceful place to live, a bargain at that. But that is no longer the truth. At first I avoided this review. No one really reads them. And if I want to see a return of mixed race people and the safety of diversity, I shouldn't tell anyone about what I have seen and experienced. But it's beyond that now. After talking with the cops following a ghetto trash child's attempt to break my window on Sunday and a visit to the office today it's clear, I'm on my own. Either something preventable will happen, they will move, or I'll find another place and walk away. Clearly anyone who would treat an animal like this is a sociopath and is popping out fatherless sociopaths, as evidenced by their behavior in the previous months. So I don't expect this to go away. I also get to watch a "drop" every day at the new trap house next door. Nothing the cops or management will do about this situation either. Be careful if you're looking for a safe place to rent. Looks can be deceiving.
